Every tried to make it at home? Here's how to do it--
The taiyaki pans are about $8 in asian stores/markets but a bit more online. I got mine at Super H Mart in Atlanta.
She's using Bisquick shake-n-pour--I use waffle mix--Belgian if I can get it--and it works better with a slightly thinner batter--hers is too thick.
She's also glopping in waaay too much filling--I like the cheese idea, tho'. A little less filling works best.
Gas stoves work best of all--I have a ceramic cook top and that does not lend itself to good Taiyaki---so I use either the gas burner on the grill or a little single-burner that I keep with my camping gear. I am interested in trying it ON the grill itself, although the handles could melt if you aren't careful...

If you have asian stores around it might be even cheaper. I've seen two types of Taiyaki-ki--the ones like mine (in the video) and some plain black metal ones. Mine is easier and safer to use. The fishies you buy at taiyaki stands are smaller--these are much more generous. My all time fav treat is the TAIYAKI ICE CREAM SANDWICH! They sell these in the ice cream section of some Asian stores--it's a Taiyaki made of ice-cream cone-stuff--inside is insanely good vanilla icecream and ANKO!!! The vanilla and red bean taste is out of this world and the crispness of the fish takes it over the goal. My local Korean market has them occasionally and I stock up....nommmmonnnmmmmnommm

Asian stores around? *glares at tumbleweeds* Nah, that's just wishful thinking. I found the ones like yours on Amazon, though I was impressed by the Barbie-sized taiyaki set I saw on eBay. I've never tried anko, either. We hicks mostly eat things derived from cows or anything that stood still long enough for us to shoot it *lol*

I've discovered if you have a military base nearby you'll likely have Asian stores--and we have lots around here. Anko isn't a taste I can quite describe--but if you cant get it you could use strawberry jam. Some people like it--some don't and not all anko is created equally--some is fabulous and some sucks. I tend to like the smoother, softer anko. I was grossed out originally by the idea of sweet beans but it grows on you.
